Tasmania travel: The charms of Freycinet Peninsula ... in winter

PHILIP YOUNG, Mercury

It’s the shortest day of the year in Tassie and we are in the middle of a feeding frenzy. It’s a feast of sorts, but we are nowhere near the Hobart waterfront or Dark Mofo.

We are on a boat just outside Schouten Passage near the southern end of the Freycinet Peninsula and the air is filled with seabirds.

Kerry and Kim have a passion for wildlife, and their vast knowledge of the coastline is clear in the casual commentary.

The boat easily accommodates our mix of two families, with a comfortable covered-in cabin to retreat into from the elements and an awning over the rear deck area. It’s a purpose-built vessel, modern and clean, with on-board tea and coffee and a small toilet if required.

GETTING THERE

Airlines fly daily into Hobart and Launceston. Coles Bay, on the Freycinet Peninsula, is about two hours driving time from both cities.

STAY

There are a range of short-stay accommodation options in Coles Bay. Try Forest Edge for brilliant holiday retreat accommodating up to eight people. The home includes a large living area, freestanding wood heater, big modern kitchen, BBQ facilities and an expansive deck overlooking Freycinet National Park. From $240 a night.

DO

Freycinet Charters takes private family and small group bookings for up to 10 passengers. A three-hour Schouten Island cruise costs $750. Other package deals are available.

May 2019 family group loved Freycinet!

So glad we chose Freycinet charters for the half day tour!! Had a fantastic tour to Hazards beach, Wineglass Bay beach and Schouten Island! We were picked up from Freycinet lodge at 8.45 by Stephen and taken to the main Coles Bay jetty. We left the jetty in a boat that was very well equipped to take care of us. It had life jackets, warm jackets, water, towels and a small toilet. We were given some safety instructions before we left. Erin ,who was on board, was extremely friendly and gave us a lot of information as we went speeding into the ocean. We first got off at Hazards Beach, looked around and then walked to Wineglass bay beach (around 30 mins easy walk). After spending some time there we walked backed to Hazards Beach, boarded the boat and went to Schouten Island. There was absolutely nobody on the beach and was absolutely beautiful!! We then got back on the boat and were dropped to the main jetty. On the return , we saw a seal colony and a 30 year old eagles nest with an eagle perched up on a tree branch. We got back to the jetty at 2 pm. Both Erin and Stephen were extremely warm and friendly. This was one of the best day trips that we have ever have. An absolute must do when in Coles bay!!

What a great review by Tanishaaaa (TripAdvisor review).

Wineglass Bay in May (with friends!)

Freycinet Charters had a wonderful group of young Thai professionals from Bangkok on board for a special cruise to Wineglass Bay on Wednesday 15 May. The group went through school in Thailand and then to university in Wollongong together and continue to catch up and holiday somewhere around the world every year (WOW), lucky for us this year was Freycinet Peninsula! We hope you enjoyed your special day on Wineglass Bay.
We certainly enjoyed having you on board. Kim & Kerry and Freycinet Charters!
